Honda Ventures into Space with Reusable Rocket Test, Shares Rise 6% YTD

Honda Motor Co. has successfully launched and landed an experimental reusable rocket in Hokkaido, Japan, marking a significant milestone for its space research unit. The 6.3-meter vehicle reached 271.4 meters altitude and landed within 37 centimeters of its target, showcasing proprietary guidance algorithms and retractable landing gear.

The achievement positions Honda as the first private Japanese firm to demonstrate vertical takeoff and landing technology—a critical step toward suborbital launch capability by 2029. While space remains a nascent segment for the automaker, the test signals potential diversification beyond its Core automotive business.

Honda shares have gained 6% year-to-date, buoyed by strong vehicle sales. The rocket program, initiated in 2021, aligns with the company's broader tech ambitions in mobility and data services.
